The first global, data-backed view of how leading subscription apps build, price, and scale on the web.

## Scope

- **8 App Store categories:** Health & Fitness, EdTech, Utilities, Photo & Video, Lifestyle, Social, Finance & Career, Productivity.
- **5 global regions:** United States, Europe, Latin America (LATAM), Asia Pacific (APAC), Middle East & Africa (MEA).
- **3 independent data sources:** aggregated parsing of public global web funnels, Meta Ads Library, and third-party ad intelligence — supplemented by anonymized FunnelFox platform data.
- **Time window:** 2023–2025, with 2025 projections.

## Key findings (TL;DR)

1. **82% of top-grossing apps use Web2App in 2025**, up from ~46% in 2024.
2. **Web2App adoption grew +77% YoY**, indexed 20 → 35 → 62 across 2023, 2024, 2025.
3. **Funnel scalers post ~176% YoY revenue growth** vs. single-funnel peers.
4. **90% of scaler subscription revenue flows through the web**, ~10% through in-app.
5. **Health & Fitness leads with ~196 high-volume funnels** — ~5× the next category.
6. **Finance & Career projected at ~70% growth in 2025** — the fastest of any category. AI Tools, Language Learning and Astrology form the next tier (12–22%).
7. **US captures ~63.7% of $60B+ global Web2App revenue**; Europe ~14.2%; APAC ~7.7%.
8. **The biggest funnel drop-off happens before the paywall**, in the quiz/onboarding phase — not at checkout.
9. **Web LTV outperforms in-app LTV** across plan durations. Annual plans lock in ~$69 LTV at month 1; blended median LTV reaches ~$67 by month 12.
10. **Payment infrastructure is now a growth lever.** Multi-PSP routing, local payment methods, and intelligent retry logic produce material net-revenue gains.

## Chapter 1 — Market overview

Web2App is now the default growth engine for top-grossing subscription apps. Adoption nearly doubled year over year (~46% → 82%) as teams shifted acquisition to the web for iteration speed and full funnel control. Revenue mix among funnel scalers is now ~90% web / ~10% in-app.

**High-volume funnels by category** (>100 creatives/month):

| Category | Funnels |
|---|---|
| Health & Fitness | ~196 |
| EdTech & Mobile Learning | ~42 |
| Lifestyle | ~36 |
| Photo & Video | ~28 |
| Finance & Career | ~22 |
| Utilities | ~18 |

**2025 projected category growth:**

| Category | Growth |
|---|---|
| Finance & Career | ~70% |
| AI Tools | ~22% |
| Language Learning | ~18% |
| Astrology | ~12% |
| Health & Fitness | single-digit |
| Other categories | single-digit |

## Chapter 2 — Conversions

The biggest drop in a Web2App funnel happens **before the paywall**. Quiz/onboarding length, perceived progress, and value framing produce the largest conversion-rate lifts. Apps that compress the pre-paywall flow and personalize the paywall to quiz answers consistently outperform.

The fastest-growing apps run **a network of intent-driven funnels**, not one universal flow — each tuned to a specific motivation or persona. Quartile analysis shows top-quartile revenue brands operate substantially more funnels than bottom-quartile peers.

## Chapter 3 — Monetization

Pricing is the fastest way to win or lose growth. Plan duration mix, anchoring, trial structure, and offer cadence drive the majority of monetization variance. Effective pricing communicates value at the right moment — the most successful apps personalize plan presentation based on quiz answers and intent signals.

## Chapter 4 — LTV and profitability

**Blended LTV by plan duration** (median, $):

| Plan | Path |
|---|---|
| All plans (blended) | M1 $18 → M6 $53 → M12 ~$67 |
| 1 week | M1 $8 → M6 $34 → M12 plateau low |
| 1 month | M1 $14 → M6 $50 → M12 steady linear |
| 3 months | Stair-step at renewals |
| 1 year | M1 $69, locked in |

Web LTV outperforms in-app LTV in many subscription verticals because in-app revenue is reduced by store commissions (15–30%) and constrained by limited pricing flexibility. Quiz-style onboarding lifts LTV not just by improving conversion but by improving *user quality* — users self-select and arrive primed.

## Chapter 4b — Retention and churn

Plan duration reshapes the retention curve:

| Plan | M12 retention |
|---|---|
| Weekly | ~3% (steepest decay) |
| Monthly | ~10% |
| Quarterly | stair-step at renewal boundaries |
| Annual | locks in revenue at M1 |

Cancellation flows are an underrated lever. Tailored offers, pause options, and downgrade paths recover material revenue that most teams treat as inevitable churn.

## Chapter 5 — Payments

Web payments — unlike in-app billing — let teams:

- Choose and route between payment service providers (PSPs).
- Support local payment methods (Apple Pay, Google Pay, SEPA, iDEAL, Pix, regional rails).
- Tune retry logic for declined transactions.
- Avoid app-store-tied account blocks and fraud limits.

The result is materially higher authorization rates and lower fraud exposure. Apps with multi-PSP routing and broad local-payment-method support out-earn single-provider peers on a net-revenue basis.
