# Merchant country

> Set the merchant country FunnelFox Payments sends to Primer, so Apple Pay, Google Pay, and SCA checks match your acquirer.

Merchant country is the country where the acquiring entity that processes your
payments is registered. It isn't your customers' country, and it can differ
from your company's country and from the country in your contract with
FunnelFox.

Apple Pay and Google Pay use it to offer local card schemes, such as Mada,
Cartes Bancaires, eftpos, Interac, Elo, and JCB. It also decides whether a
payment is domestic or cross-border, and affects
[SCA and 3DS](https://funnelfox.com/docs/billing/payments-3ds.md) exemptions.

> [!WARNING]
>
> FunnelFox can't see your acquiring setup, so we can't choose your merchant
> country for you. For example, a business registered in the UAE may have a US
> company or a contract with a US
> PSP (Payment Service Provider). Its merchant country is
> then `US`, not `AE`.

## How it works

When a checkout session is created, FunnelFox Payments sends a merchant country
to Primer as `order.countryCode`. It picks the value in this order:

1. The override for the customer's country, if you set one.
2. Otherwise, your default merchant country.
3. If no default is set, the customer's own country. Avoid this: it's almost
   never your merchant country.

The customer's country comes from their IP address, unless your checkout passes
a country.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Merchant country applies to payments processed through Primer and to new
> checkout sessions. Renewals aren't affected.

## Setup

**1. Find your merchant country**

Open your PSP contract and find the acquiring entity named in it. Its
country of registration is your merchant country. You can also ask your
PSP account manager:

```text theme={null}
Which entity acquires our transactions, and in which country is it registered? We need it to set up Apple Pay and Google Pay in Primer.
```

If you use several PSPs, find the merchant country of each one and note
which customer countries each one processes. If you split one customer
country across several PSPs, check [Routing scenarios](#routing-scenarios)
first.

> **Stripe accounts**
>
> Your merchant country is the country of your Stripe account. Find it in
> the Stripe Dashboard under
> [Account details](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/account), in the
> business and legal entity information. You can also ask Stripe Console:
> "What is my merchant country?"
>
> Use the Stripe account country even if your contract names a Stripe
> entity in another country. For example, a German Stripe account contracts
> with Stripe Payments Europe (Ireland), but its merchant country is `DE`,
> not `IE`.

**2. Set merchant country**

Go to **Settings > Main** in your FunnelFox Payments dashboard and enter
your merchant country. Use ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes, for example `NL`.

**One PSP**

1. Enter your merchant country in **New Value** of
   `primer_collection.default.merchant_country_code`.
2. Leave `primer_collection.default.merchant_country_code_overrides`
   as `{}`.

**Several PSPs by customer country**

1. In `primer_collection.default.merchant_country_code`, enter the
merchant country of the PSP that handles most countries.
2. In `primer_collection.default.merchant_country_code_overrides`, add
one entry per customer country that goes to a PSP with a different
merchant country. Use a JSON map of customer country to merchant
   country.

For example, Adyen NL processes everyone, and Stripe US processes US
and Canadian customers. Set `merchant_country_code` to `NL` and the
overrides to `{"US": "US", "CA": "US"}`.

You can also send the confirmed values to your Solution Manager, and they
set them for you.

**3. Save**

Click **Save** in the **Unsaved changes** panel on the right.

## Routing scenarios

Apple Pay and Google Pay support one merchant country per customer country.
Check these scenarios if you route payments across several PSPs.

| Scenario | What happens | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| Several PSPs with different merchant countries for the same customer country, split by card network, BIN, amount, A/B test, or similar | Not supported | Route each such customer country to PSPs with the same merchant country. |
| Failover routing in your Primer workflow | The failover attempt keeps the merchant country set at checkout. | Fail over to a PSP with the same merchant country as the primary one. |
| Primer workflow routes by card issuer country, not customer location | Partly supported: overrides use the customer's detected country, so travelers and VPN users can get a merchant country that doesn't match the PSP used. | Use the same countries in the overrides as in your workflow conditions. |
